Pertussis vaccination during pregnancy – protecting the most vulnerable

Symposium in Englisch

Speaker:
Dr. phil. nat. Thierry Oliver Schaffner(a)
(a) Medical Lead Vaccines, Medical Department, GlaxoSmithKline AG, Talstrasse 3–5, 3053 Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland

Pertussis (whopping cough) is one of the most important, bacterial vaccine-preventable infectious diseases in Switzerland with 9’400 cases annually (based on the Sentinella surveillance system 2012–2014)1.
The disease represents a high risk for children; particularly for infants 6 months of age. Vaccination against pertussis during pregnancy is an effective way to protect the most vulnerable group from the disease1.
With the latest update of the pertussis vaccination recommendations, the gynaecological doctor‘s offices take an even more important role in protecting mother and child from vaccine-preventable diseases2.
Many young patients do not have a general practitioner; hence their gynaecologist is their contact person. For many gynaecologists vaccination of patients is not a day-to-day topic and there is a kind of insecurity about the current vaccination recommendations and the underlying scientific rationale including the benefit and safety of vaccination of pregnant women or women who plan pregnancy. Furthermore, the national authorities recommend certain vaccinations specifically for health-care professionals in order to maximize protection of their patients2.
In this presentation we focus on the current recommendations on pertussis vaccination in pregnant women published by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, the Federal Vaccination Commission and the Swiss Association for Gynaecology and Obstetrics3. In this context we will show clinical data about the risk-benefit profile of this vaccination and we will give the audience the opportunity to ask questions.
